Baptisms
We delight in baptising many babies and children here in Bowdon Parish in our three church centres. In the service, often called a Christening, parents thank God for the birth of their child, and commit them into the hands of God for a lifelong journey of faith in the church and the world. The parents and chosen godparents promise to support, pray for and bring up the child as a follower of Jesus, and the church welcomes them to the family.
We also welcome adults for baptism. Whatever their age, baptism is the beginning of an adventure as a follower of Jesus Christ. You are never too old to take this step, and being baptised as an adult is a particularly memorable experience. Adults can also be Confirmed – a deeply meaningful, once in a lifetime, moment in the Church of England where someone personally affirms the promises made at their baptism – perhaps made by their godparents when they were a baby. In a Confirmation service they are declaring their faith in Jesus Christ and commitment to living as His disciple. Through prayer and the laying on of hands by the Bishop, they receive God’s blessing and the strengthening gift of the Holy Spirit.
