Children and Young People

The Warmest Welcome Awaits Our Younger Members

Bowdon Parish is a Parish for all ages. There is always a welcome for Parishioners of all ages at our services with many specifically aimed at the younger audience. Bowdon is always buzzing with the youngsters of the Parish.

Kids’ Church is one of our strengths.  At St Luke’s there are thriving children’s Sunday morning groups, one of which is shared with our Methodist neighbours.  At St Mary’s, all parents can choose between the children’s groups in the parish centre, or the play area in the church.  Choir trebles enjoy “vestry group” during the sermon.

Young people are welcome wherever they want to be on Sunday mornings.  We support them especially in bringing their talents to lead worship, including at Café Sundae, Sunday Sessions and Zone2.  Our young people are leaving at 18 with a living faith, to mission or university, and this year several have started to discuss ordination.

Underground is our youth club where young people meet to have fun and find their way in life. After a recent growth spurt, we are regularly seeing over 90 young people across the three Friday evening sessions, with some weeks breaking the 100 mark.

Easter holiday clubs for 5 to 11 year olds have also been a great success.

Young People – Consent Form

Click on the link below to go to our online consent form. This form enables parents to give permission for their Young Person to attend any or all of the following regular Youth activities in Bowdon Parish without having to fill in separate forms for each one. Please indicate each group that your child currently belongs to.

Easter 2017 – Kingdom Club Goes Frozen

During Holy Week this year, I was privileged to be involved in the annual Bowdon Parish Easter club. Over 100 children joined us each day to learn more about God, the bible, Jesus and how having a faith can help us live our daily lives, happily and without fear.

With the help of Disney’s “Frozen”, we looked at fear, strength, wisdom and love. Jonah and the Whale, David and Goliath and the wise man who built his house upon the rocks helped us see how God speaks to us through scripture, helping us to overcome our fears, giving us strength and wisdom. The last day brought all those themes together when we learnt that God so loved the world that he sent his son to die for us.

Who would have thought that Anna’s sacrifice for Elsa could be used to show, in such a powerful way, that the gospel of the Easter message is as relevant today as it was 2,000 years ago! I loved every single millisecond of my time learning about God’s kingdom in the parish centre, however, I do want to make a very special mention of the amazing team, mug shot alert above/below (edit as appropriate), who made it all happen. I think that teamwork has a very special place in God’s kingdom, as does the Cha Cha slide!

Pre-School Age

Bowdon Pre-School

Bowdon PreSchool is based at the Bowdon Parish Centre.. Together, members of the team have a wealth of childcare experience and see the opportunity of nurturing young children as a real privilege. Our Christian values are at the heart of everything we do—from the way we encourage positive behaviour to saying our little prayer of thanks at snack time.

We see our role as ensuring that the children have plenty of play time that has an educational purpose and we take seriously the responsibility of preparing the children for school. Our bite-size lessons, taught by our qualified primary teachers, encourage an interest in sounds and numbers, and by using songs and props we hope to ignite our children’s imagination.

Bowdon Preschool is open daily during term time from 9 am for three and-a-half, four and- a-half or five-and-a-half hour sessions. We welcome children aged 2 to 5.

To find out more, please call on 07912 205469 or email info@bowdonpreschool.co.uk arrange to visit us or take a look at our website.

St Luke’s S Club

Wanted Year 2s and above

On the first three Sundays of each month, S Club members meet at St Luke’s and then leave the younger S Club Discoverers behind and head across the road to the larger Methodist hall, where we can make as much noise and spread out as much as we want.

S Club is different every week but often includes songs, drama, games and discussion. One Sunday recently we played ʻCopycatʼ and ‘Splat’; we acted out the story of Daniel; and we had a time thinking about what worries us and what comforts us. Then we had a fantastic prayer time, lighting a candle and burning in its flame all the worries we had written down. (Those are an S Club secret.)

The older S clubbers take roles in the all age service on the fourth Sunday at St Luke’s, helping with prayers and readings, giving out the hymn books or keeping the little ones entertained. This builds their confidence and shows they are really valued and valuable members of our church.

Parents and carers either stay for the St Luke’s service or drop their children off and come and join us when we return to church for coffee at about 10.40 am. All S Club sessions are freestanding, so children who can only come once a month or once a year do not miss out or feel out of place. New S clubbers—and teenage helpers—are always most welcome.

Youth Activities

Scouts – 4th Bowdon

For boys and girls aged 10 – 14

Bowdon has a thriving Scout Troop with over 35 boys and 15 girls meeting on Monday night from 7.30 pm to 9.15 pm in the Parish Centre.

We are keen to recruit new leaders, male and female, and would be delighted to hear from anyone who would be interested in joining us. If our search is unsuccessful, we shall be unable to continue as a mixed troop, to our immense regret. Full training and support is available from our happy and experienced team. If you are interested, do please contact me on 07715 541 114 or via the Parish Office, 929 1537.

The troop is one of the oldest in the District — a Church troop was started by the Parish Church in 1910, only three years after Scouting was introduced by Lord Baden-Powell. Traditional scouting and camping are strong features of the programme and we were one of the first troops to have girl members.

The troop is one of the oldest in the District — a Church troop was started by the Parish Church in 1910, only three years after Scouting was introduced by Lord Baden-Powell.
