Our fine Choir, which has some 40 members (including around 15 boy and girl trebles aged eight upwards), exists both to lead the congregational singing and to offer music in a range of styles from mediaeval to modern as an integral part of worship.
Every summer our choir sings for the services in one of England's great cathedrals. Following a very successful visit to Durham In 2007, they have been invited back this year. They will sing the evensongs from Monday 29 August to Thursday 1 September. They will be giving a lunchtime recital on Saturday 2 September; and on Sunday 4th they will sing the morning service at a local Durham church.
There will be an opportunity to hear some of the music they will be singing in Durham at the 10.45 am service at St Mary's on Sunday 28 August, when we shall pray for God's blessing on their trip.
The Choir is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music and young members are encouraged to work for awards promoted through that body, which reflect a chorister’s progress both musically and spiritually.
The Choir enjoys a happy social atmosphere and outings are arranged during the year which include a holiday singing for all the services in a Cathedral for a week.
Our Director of Music, Sasha Johnson Manning, has an international reputation as a soprano soloist and as a composer of religious music. A highly-acclaimed recent work is The Manchester Carols, a suite of 16 carols with words by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy.
